Berrien County has the oldest courthouse in the State of Michigan, completed in 1839. The block which contains the courthouse also has the sheriff’s residence and jail (most of which was demolished). The sheriff’s house is still intact and has many furnished rooms from that era. There is also a blacksmith’s shop and an old log cabin two-story house on the property, which are open to the public. A record storage building completes the square. This building is closed.
Take a tour of the Horn Archaeological Museum on the campus of Andrews University. They have many artifacts, dating back to the time of Abraham when he stayed in Ur of the Chaldees, until the Roman era. They have an extensive collection of cuneiform tablets and one attributed to the time of Solomon. This was a very surprising find, well worth a side trip to explore.
On the way to Buchannen, take a tour of the wine country of Berrien County. Stop at Lemon Creek Winery (not very interesting). Heart of the Vineyard Winery is more interesting. They have tours and give classes on wine and brandy making. Sample some of their products. Sampled their brandy too: one was pear, the other is cherry. They are distilled, rather than burnt. The pear brandy tastes like slipovitch, the Yugoslavian plum brandy; an acquired taste.
Go also to Tabor Hill Winery, one of the better known ones of the area.. They also have a restaurant on the premises, which has a varied menu. Taste some of their products.
Remember to drink with care. Drinking and driving do not go well together.
