"I came to the MA in Field Archaeology as a mature student, without a first degree in archaeology but with a long standing interest in the subject, and a particular curiosity about the archaeology of the area where I live, the Yorkshire Pennines. The course is highly structured and focussed, and quite demanding - which is what I wanted ! but what was an unforeseen and particularly rewarding extra was the opportunity I had to use the training and skills immediately to effect and apply them to issues in which I was already interested. It was an especially sweet experience finally to have access to equipment to design my own projects, but equally important was the wonderful atmosphere of support from the staff and indeed my fellow MA students. In retrospect I made some extraordinary demands on the system, including being allowed to cart expensive equipment up to one of the highest archaeological sites in Britain; the interest and encouragement I received were a crucial part of the success of the project."

In each of the Autumn and Spring terms each taught masters student will: (i) take a 20-credit 'signature' module for his/her masters programme. (ii) choose a 20-credit 'supplementary' module (iii) take two 5-credit 'research skills' module. After Easter, students give an assessed lecture to their peers on a topic of their choice, after which they embark on a dissertation, again on a subject of their choice, supervised by a member of staff over the Summer. For further details of modules and teaching please contact Steve Roskams.

Applications are welcomed from graduates with a good honours degree in Archaeology or a related subject (e.g. History, Geography, Sociology, Art History). Mature students or those with less conventional qualifications but with professional experience in this field will be seriously considered. Since all teaching and assessment is in English, overseas participants must have a good working knowledge of the language. Most applicants are interviewed, unless living or working

When requested the Graduate Secretary will send prospective candidates information about the University of York, including details about the Department of Archaeology (which incorporates the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies) and the MA in Field Archaeology. The candidate will also receive an application form which once completed and returned to the Graduate Office starts the admissions process. Please be aware that courses sometimes become fully booked and please don't underestimate the time and trouble needed to organise the funds for tuition fees and living expenses; and somewhere to live. Candidates are advised to make a preparatory visit to King's Manor for an interview to discuss these aspects of their application as well as to talk through the nature of the study programme and any previously prepared outlines of proposed topics of research, where this is appropriate, or the candidate's thoughts about a study subject.

The following is taken from a quote from a student who recently took this course:<br

The improvement in mass spectroscopy as applied to laser-fusion dating has greatly improved the dating process, accuracy and effort. You might do some research on this aspect. You might also ignore all the bible thumpery anti dating rhetoric as it is all poppycock and will make your paper invalid and stupid sounding.

Last 10 years, you say?

Well, since the early 1900's radioisopopic dating has been assisting geophysicists date strata and the things within that strata.

Potassium 40 decays into Argon 40 hence the "potassium/argon dating you've read about. Enough already! If you don't believe in science then what are you doing on the National Geographic channel? There has to be a Pat Robertson channel on here somewhere...

Why is it that every video with anything to do with evolution has to turn into a Jesus/Bible vs. scientific/evolution debate? I have worked both in an academic setting and in the cultural resource management industry, and I have loved every minute of it, and made more than enough money to live comfortably. As with anything in life, if you work hard and make sure that you position yourself well by getting the credentials you need to allow yourself to advance- with a little luck, you will be on your way to a rewarding career. By credentials - I am talking about - MINIMALLY - an M.A. from a well-recognized university. A PhD is a big step up, but it might not help you break into the field which employs 90+% of the professional archaeologists in the USA - cultural resource management.Right now, the U.S. economy is in pretty bad shape. Both the CRM and acadmic fields will be hurting for quite a while. However, an industrious archaeologist with reasonable expectations and enought drive to offer a few temporary sacrifices, will likely be able to find a position in consulting (CRM) and ride the economic waves into the next eceonmic boom. Once that boom starts, advancement will be easier than it is today.

I have been a professional archaeologist for 20+ years.
